The Boeing 747 is a wide-body commercial airliner, often referred to by the nickname "Jumbo Jet". It is among the world's most recognizable aircraft, and was the first wide-body ever produced. The first flight of the Boeing 747 was held February 9, 1969. At the time of its creation, the Boeing 747 was the largest, heaviest and capacious passenger airliner in the world and remained so for 35 years, until the A380, which first flew in 2005.

Boeing-747 has a double-deck layout, the upper deck is much smaller than the length of the bottom and resembles a sort of "hump". A total of about 1,523 vehicles ordered and delivered 1,405 civilian modifications 747. Boeing-747 was one of the most recognizable aircraft in the world, the hero of dozens of films and a symbol of world civil aviation.

Aircraft History

The idea of developing the Boeing 747 occurred during the rapid growth of air traffic in the 60's of last century. The transportation market in the U.S. was dominated by the Boeing 707, but it has difficulty coping with the growing flow of passengers.

Corporation «Boeing» has worked to develop major transport aircraft for the U.S. Army, but then lost the contest to Corporation Lockheed - C-5 Galaxy. However, the most loyal to «Boeing» buyers still have ordered the development of the giant passenger aircraft, which was twice more than "707".

In 1966 «Boeing» introduced a new aircraft "747". The first version of the project was a fully double-decked plane, but with such a configuration, there were some difficulties, and the scheme was abandoned in favor of the "hump".

Factory «Boeing» did not have the capacity to build such a giant airliner, that is why a new aircraft factory was built in the small town of Everett in Washington, which became home to this unique family of aircraft.

At that time there was a thought that such giants will soon be superseded by supersonic aircraft. Therefore, the Boeing 747 was designed as a freight-passenger aircraft. Over time, it was planned to convert all aircraft in cargo. The crew cabin was placed on the upper deck specifically to be able to transform the nose of the plane in the cargo ramp. It was assumed that the market does not need more than 400 aircraft of this type, however, despite the criticism and tough competition in 1993, was built thousand aircraft. Only in the first decade of the XXI century the volume of sales "747" began to fall.

Pratt & Whitney Company has developed a huge turbofan engine with high bypass ratio - JT9D, which was originally used exclusively on Boeing 747. In order to improve the safety and airworthiness of the aircraft four hydraulic systems and slotted flaps that allow aircraft to runways standard length were set to "747".

During aircraft tests for airworthiness certificate «Boeing» developed an unusual training device known as "Waddell Wagon" (named after the test pilot of the "747", Jack Waddell) which consisted of a cabin layout that is installed on the roof of the truck. The simulator was designed to train pilots to taxiing operate an airplane with a high position cab.

Boeing was supposed to deliver the first aircraft by 1970 - that means, that it was necessary to develop, build, test and certify the aircraft in less than 4 years. The work went very quickly, but the enormous costs of the corporation to build a new factory and the development of aircraft delivered «Boeing» on the brink of bankruptcy. Nevertheless, the enormous profits from the sale of the airplane recovered the entire cost.
